Freshers’ Revue
Every year, we perform a revue, primarily for freshers, to gain a taste of what it is like to rehearse and perform with us. The show is performed in the Union Concert Hall in December. Admission is free and there is a collection at the end to raise money for RAG.
This year, the revue has been written by Shamini Bundell, one of our own members. A pseudo-fairytale, it contains many songs you are sure to know!
What’s It About?
In the town of Hamlin, Little Red Riding Hood is having rat trouble, Buttons is having Prince trouble, and Jack is living off the glory of his giant-killing days.
… ‘Charming’ is a fairytale gone wrong, filled with royal weddings, dancing dames and singing cat bandits. With music from Disney, Wicked, Sondheim, Tim Minchin and even Scrubs, there’s something for everyone. And as it is MTsoc’s first show of the year there are loads of opportunities for freshers, whether you want a big role or a small one, to play in the band or help out behind the scenes.
You can find out more about the show, the auditions and the rehearsals at our Initial Meeting on Thursday 6th October at 7.30 in the Huxley building, room 344. If you can’t find it call Felix on 07756816401. It’s a good chance to get to know everyone and even practice some audition songs together!
The auditions are this weekend, the 8th and 9th of October. On the Saturday, they are from 1-2pm and 4-6pm; on the sunday, 12-2pm and 3.30-6pm. A slot can be booked after the meeting, or by emailing shamini.bundell@gmail.com. If you are unable to get to the meeting, then you can meet the directors on Saturday 8th at the Gleeful event in the same room (2-4pm) before the start of auditions.
Charming: An Alternative Ever After will be performed from the 5th-7th of December. Rehearsals will take place every Sunday afternoon and on some Monday and Tuesday evenings, depending on what part you are playing.
Audition Information
If you cannot make the auditions you can still be part of the chorus for this show, so email shamini.bundell@gmail.com if you have any issues with the auditions.
In your 15 minute audition slot you will be asked to read a small section of script, do a vocal warm-up and sing a song – either of your own choosing or from the list of suggestions below. If you are auditioning for one of the lead roles we will provide sheet music and recordings of the songs we would like you to learn. We will also teach you the songs in the initial meeting as we do not expect you to have heard them before.
Girls: For lower voices/altos we’ll teach you the beginning of ‘Comfort and Joy’. If you have a higher range we will teach you ‘Giants In The Sky’ which we can also transpose up or down slightly to fit it comfortably into your range.
Guys: If you have a low voice go for ‘Just Can’t Wait To Be King’ from The Lion King. If you’re a tenor we’ll teach you a small section of ‘Comfort and Joy’.
Links to recordings and sheet music for all of these songs can found on the website on our Show Resources page. If you aren’t sure what to sing go for ‘Just Can’t Wait To Be King’ and don’t worry, we’ll fill in the spoken Zazu parts!
More information will be sent out to our mailing list, so sign up if you haven’t already at our Sign Up Page/.
